May 3, 2007
A guest post from Steve’s wife, Amanda!
Recently I have been convicted of how I use my mouth. We live in a society where quick witted banter and sacasm reign. If you can sell your personality and leave people wanting more then you’ve won. It’s an unfortunate state of affairs. Unfortunately, I have found myself in this camp time and time again. Often times I find myself speaking just to fill the air of uncomfortable silence or joking around using a wealh of sarcasm just so that people will find me enjoyable to be around. What’s funny is that even writing this post I am fighting to say my heart and not just throw around clever words that would make you think I was billiant. Oh….conviction…how sweet it is!
ISSUE: What I am really struck with is the power of our words and our tongue. In James 3:6 is says,”the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and it is set on fire by Hell.” Also it is stated in verse 9, “with it (our tongue) we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude.” That’s intense, but how many times do we say something because “it was just the flow of conversation” or we were “just kidding.” It is this casual use in which we use our mouth that can often have subltle and sometimes hurtful reprecussions. Most often we are not trying to hurt people or shift the spritual atmostphere, but the reality is that we have been given authority to speak blessing or curses, positivity or negativity, love or hate.
SOLUTION: What if we would just allow for the silence until we were lead to say something? What if we filtered our thoughts so that what we said was only for the edicfication of one another? What if we cultivated a life of prayer and dependace on the Lord so that what we spoke was the heart of God and not our flesh?
I think what it really comes down to is Matt 12:34 “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
QUESTION: What are we investing into our hearts?
More revelation to come…stay tuned!
