In reflection of a few recent conversations I’ve had I’ve been pondering a couple realities.

  • collisions of the heart draw out the deposits that God has been sowing into our lives.  Often times it’s easy to rest and relax amongst a community that has strong common vision and common values on almost everything.
  • it is the crisis moments of life that pull and reveal the fruits of our growth (or lack thereof) in the Lord
  • I love that God uses tensions and collisions of life to mature us and develop our character and convictions.
  • I love knowing that there is truly another Kingdom coming from heaven and that I’m not living for this age but having hope in eternity.

Yeah, just to echo. It’s the passage in Proverbs 27 about iron sharpening iron. If we didn’t have each other we would just be like globs of play-dough, right?

  2. It’s great to be running this race with a community of like-minded FaLoGs (Friends and Lovers of God), so that when those crises, collisions and tensions erupt, we know that we’re not praying and fasting alone, even if it’s a solitary journey. I love you guys! You’re a constant source of inspiration!

hey steve. I’m Evan, I helped out at onething in KC (the skinny white boy)

I was listening to Luke Wood’s devotional tonight (Monday) and heard you playing something that sounded like a voice singing. It sounded amazing and I just wanted to know what pedals you were using…I can only think of two that I heard, distortion and volume. haha.

  4. Nate: you got it!

Skim: (*can I call you Skim?) tks, we love running w/ you too!

  5. Evan: tks for the comments! there were lots of skinny white boys…myself included, sorry i can’t quite place a face. are you at IHOP-KC?

anyway, I was playing tonight, but it was bobby that was generating that effect. you might be surprised how he did it since you were only watching the web-cast. if you were at the set, you would have noticed that he was actually running his vocal mic through his pedal board and singing the *aahhhs and laaaass with several layered effects engaged. he primarily used the Line6 delay and distortion modelers, ernieball volume, crybaby wah, a boss reverb pedal (black), and the boss superdrive pedal (yellow). hope that helps!

  6. Evan Olsen Says:

wow. That’s actually really amazing. Give Bobby a super impressed face for me. heheh.

I was uh..tall, skinny, blonde, longish hair. We didn’t really talk all too much but me and my two brothers had helped during setup, tear down and some in-between. Better idea?

I’m not from IHOP-KC. I’m actually from IHOP Tallahassee down in ye ole florider.

  7. Evan: I totally remember you now! blessings to you in FL, tks for helping out at onething!

I’m not sure where to start, but just read the above and recognized myself as being the crisis, tensions and collisions in life. Got a phone call from a family member saying “Steven must have known you would read this and you would be upset”. Well, you do know I read this blog each and everyday and I do it because I’m interested in your life as I always have been for the last 26 years. I didn’t expect to come on here and read something so personal and hurtful. It is my job and always has been to take the risk of discussing things that you may not always agree with. When our family comes to your blog, I’ll receive more phone calls. So to everyone out there reading this message. I just visited my grandson Steven and had a wonderful time with him and his wife Amanda. And yes, we did have some indepth conversations and we don’t see eye-to-eye on everything. However, I love him and respect him and I’m here for him 100% and he can count on that forever.

  9. Grammy: I appreciate you so much. And I valued our conversations. Some were tough, but I beleive they challenged steven and I to really press for why we believe what we do and why we do what we do. Thank you. I love You!

  10. in response to Deanna’s (my grandmother) comment above, I’d like to address the rest of our family, friends, and supporters. I ask that if you have any questions or concerns about my statements or my relationship with my grammy, please drop me an email…steveoffutt@ihop.org or call me at 301.792.6673.

secondly, I’d like to clarify my post a bit:

I only define a collision of the heart as an encounter where there are differing points of view, convictions, values, and/or beliefs which we express. Collisions are part of life and are healthy. I don’t label people as collisions. A collision, tension, or crisis is an experience NOT a person. I collide with many different values and beliefs everyday and I still try to love and live with the people that I have collisions with.

The whole point of my post was to illustrate that recent collisions have actually been good for ME b/c they reveal that which is not normally revealed…whether it be the good or bad in my heart (refering to bullet points #1 and #2). Secondly, I pointed out that collisions have been good for ME to experience b/c they develop my character and shape my convictions (referring to bullet point #3). And lastly, I pointed out that ultimatley MY hope is in eternity…which makes the collisions and tensions in this life not as dramatic as we often make them out to be (referring to bullet point #4).
